Alys Mererid Roberts is a soprano from Rhoslan in north Wales. Alys started singing in the Welsh Folk tradition at local and National Eisteddfodau around Wales. She was a Vice Chancellor's Scholar for Music at Durham University and then went on to study MA vocal studies at the Royal Academy of Music and later joined Royal Academy Opera. Previous roles include Polly 'Mrs Peachum's Guide to Love and Marriage', Shepherd Boy 'Tosca' (Mid Wales Opera), Eurydice 'Orfee aux Enfeers', Vixen 'Příhody lišky Bystroušky', Amore L’incoronazione di Poppea, Barbarina 'Le Nozze di Figaro' (RAO), Yum Yum 'The Mikado', Josephine 'Pinnafore' (Charles Court Opera) Sandmann & Taumann 'Hänsel und Gretel', and Bastienne 'Bastien und Bastienne' (Pop up Opera). Alys has worked with WNO singing Businesswoman in 'Gair ar Gnawd' by Pwyll ap Sion and created the role of Muse in WNO’s 'Hedd Wyn' by Stephen McNeff. She also regularly works with Opera Holland Park,  singing Tweedle Dee in their Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 2017 and was a 2018 OHP Young Artist, singing Annina in their La Traviata. Alys was also cover 'Slave' in Salome at ENO in the Autumn of 2019. Due to COVID19 all of Alys' contracts of 2020 were cancelled, including her debut Despina and Edith in the first co-production between Charles Court Opera and Opera Holland Park of the Pirates of Penzance among others. Alys was also due to appear as Flora in OperaGlass Works' production of The Turn of The Screw at Wiltons Music Hall in March 2020, but will now be appearing in their groundbreaking opera-film project which will be available to stream on Marquee Tv from the 30th of January 2021.
